The LaGrange baseball team gets its 2014 season underway today at Birmingham-Southern's Striplin Field in Birmingham, Ala. The Panthers' original season opener against Oglethorpe was cancelled by the weather on Wednesday.
The game marks the head coaching debut of David Kelton. Kelton was an assistant for four seasons under former head coach Kevin Howard, who is now at Reinhardt University.
Kelton added Steven Brown to the coaching staff to work with the pitchers and as recruiting coordinator. Brown comes to LaGrange from a stint with NCAA Division I member Eastern Kentucky.
The Panthers were 22-23 overall and 13-11 in the USA South last season and were the conference tournament runner-ups. The Panthers graduated 15 seniors, a class that included the team's top five hitters and top four pitchers.
The Panthers have only seven upperclassmen on the 46-man roster. Pitcher Gage Mooney and catcher Kyle Nerbonne are the team's only seniors.
Junior Tyler Brooks heads up the pitching. Brooks was 3-3 with a team-leading five saves last season while earning USA South All-Conference Honorable Mention honors.
Birmingham-Southern was 29-15 last season, including two wins over the Panthers. Birmingham-Southern won 9-4 in LaGrange and 6-4 on its home field.
The two teams will play a doubleheader Sunday in Williamson Stadium at Cleaveland Field beginning at 2 p.m.
