Panthers lose 70-60 to Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Covenant never trailed in beating LaGrange 70-60 on Tuesday. The loss stopped the Panthers' two-game losing streak and dropped them to 4-20 on the season.

The Panthers lost despite a perfect night from Nic Whitfield. Whitfield led all scorers with 22 points. He was 10-for-10 from the floor and 2-for-2 at the free throw line.

Marcus Vaughn added 12 points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds. Britt Gaylor also had 12 points, all coming on four 3-pointers.

The Panthers shot only 36.1 percent in the game. They made only 7-of-31 3-point attempts. The Scots (5-18) shot 46 percent for the game, 54.2 percent in the second half.

Covenant had four players in double figures, led by Callum Sears' 18 points. Stephen Johnson added 14 points, while Jon DeVries and Zarome Lakey had 11 each.

The Scots led 28-27 at halftime. The Panthers trailed 42-40 with 10:10 left in the game after a layup by Vaughn. The Panthers never could catch the Scots, falling behind by as much as 11 in the final minutes.

The Panthers close out the regular season Saturday when they host Maryville in a GSAC game at 4 p.m.
