Men’s Basketball: LaGrange falls in heartbreaker to Sewanee

The Men's Basketball team fell in overtime to Sewanee 93-89 Saturday night in the final game of the Wingate by Wyndham Classic held on the campus of LaGrange College. The loss brings the Panthers to 2-2 on the season.

"We didn't execute our game plan and came up with a loss," said Head Coach Kendal Wallace. "We missed way too many layups, and we turned the ball over way too much.

"We're not there yet; we're still in the development stage."

LC and Sewanee went back and forth in the first half, with no one holding a lead greater than four points.  The Panthers took a 41-38 lead going into halftime with Camerin Lyons hitting a buzzer-beater to end the period. Lyons scored seven points in the half, and LC was led by Kyle Smith, who had 10.

The second half was much of the same, with three clutch Brodie Scott three-pointers keeping the game tied with six minutes remaining. With one minute left, Bershard Edwards scored to extend the LC lead to three, 79-76. Edwards soon nailed two more free throws to make it 81-78 with under 30 seconds left. A Sewanee three that banked in with 19 seconds left tied the game, and at the horn, the score stayed the same.

Overtime was another back-and-forth affair, with four ties and lead changes alone, but four late Sewanee free throws proved to be too much, as the Tigers prevailed, 93-89.

LC was led by Edwards, who had 22 points on 10-21 shooting, as well as grabbing six rebounds and dishing out five assists, a team high. Zac Hill led the team in rebounds with nine, as well as having 16 points.

Other notable performances include Gabe Cofield, who had 10 points and eight rebounds, as well as Kyle Smith, who had 14 points in just 12 minutes. Freshman Scott also had nine points and seven rebounds.

The Panthers face Pensacola Christian at home on Monday at 6 p.m. before taking a Thanksgiving break.
