Men's Soccer: Covenant thwarts Panthers' CCS title hopes

Covenant got a late goal to take a 2-1 win over LaGrange in the Collegiate Conference of the South championship game Saturday at a packed Panther Field.

The loss can not take away from a memorable season for LC. The Panthers finished 11-5-2, winning the CCS regular season championship and tying the program's record for wins in a season.

"Really proud of what the guys have acheived this year," said Coach Ryan Dickson. "The reaction we showed after going 1-0 down was fantastic and we were able to tie it up in the second half. We had all the momentum in the second half and looked more likely to go on and win.

"Unfortunately, the game didn't go our way but we take the positives from this historic year and build on it for the fall of '23."

The Panthers had two scoring chances in the first half. William Perry's shot from the left side glanced off the far post. Four minutes later, Covenant goalkeeper Eli Honeycutt turned away Blake Webb's shot four minutes later.

The Scots scored the game's first goal. Kade Thuenissen scored his fifth goal of the season off an assist from Knox Gibson in the 23rd minute. Enrique Hernandez had a shot go wide of the mark in the final seconds of the first half as Covenant took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Panther goalkeeper Andrew Cole made two saves in the first five minutes of the second half to keep the Scots from extending their lead.

LC got the equalizer in the 69th minute. Hernandez came down the left side and passed the ball over to Blake Webb. Webb's pass found Lucas Duke open in front of the goal. Duke sent a shot past Honeycutt into the back of the net to tie the game 1-1.

But the game turned in the 78th minute. Robel Teshome was sent off after receiving his second yellow card. Covenant took advantage of the Panthers playing a man down. Thomas Drake beat Cole for the go-ahead goal with just four minutes remaining.

Hernandez and Webb were selected to the CCS Men's Soccer All-Championship Team.
