Written by: Danny Talbert

Panthers basketball opens the season with the CCS-SAA Classic at home on Nov. 11-12. The first game is against Berry College at 4 p.m. on Nov. 11. The team then takes on Sewanee at 3 p.m. the following day to close out the Classic (Nov. 12).

2022-23 season

Last season, the Panthers posted a superb 20-7 (13-3 CCS) record. This placed LC in second place out of nine teams in the CCS. The Panthers made it to the postseason CCS semifinals but dropped the game to Piedmont in a close match (Feb. 25, 2023). The team looks to carry the success of last year into the season. Coach Jason Jonus returns for his fourth season as the Head Coach of the women's basketball program. Jonus worked as an Assistant Coach for the men's basketball program at LaGrange for seven years from 2013-20, serving as the Associate Head Coach for the final three seasons. He was the Varsity Reserve Head Coach for four years.

Key returners

The sharpshooting guard Zyhia Johnson returns to the Panthers for her junior season. Last year, the Kennesaw State transfer started in 24 games and averaged a whopping 15.2 points per contest. After scoring a season-high 29 points on the road against conference opponent Maryville, she was voted CCS Player of the Week (Jan. 6, 2023). Johnson would go on to be named First Team All-Conference. Another dominant player who is returning this year is sophomore Laila Battle. During her freshman year, she played in 26 games and averaged 11.6 points per game. Battle led the team with 3-points made (27) and won CCS Rookie of the Week honors twice during the season. She was rightfully named CCS 6th Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the 2022-23 season. Sophomore forward Amanda Mclendon looks to make a big splash this season. In her freshman year, she played in 26 games and scored an average of 6.3 points and grabbed an outstanding 8.8 rebounds per game. These are just some of the key returners who will create an impact this year for the Panthers.
