Women’s Soccer: Emma Smith records career-high 19 saves in 1-0 setback at Huntingdon

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Sophomore goalkeeper Emma Smith of the LaGrange College women's soccer team finished with a career-high 19 saves during a 1-0 setback at USA South-foe Huntingdon on Wednesday evening.

Smith turned away 11-of-12 shots in the opening 45 minutes, and then all eight attempts in the second half. The Panthers fell to 7-9 overall and 1-5 in the USA South, while the Hawks improved to 4-7-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the conference.


  • Smith was busy in net from the start, denying five shots in the opening 7:31. She came up with back-to-back saves 19 seconds apart in the third minute off shots by Erika Gebhard and Sam Curtis.
  • Huntingdon scored the lone goal of the game in the 35th minute, as Lindsay Paskman buried a shot off a corner kick by Alex Calhoun.
  • The Hawks hit the post three times in the second half, with the attempts coming from Kirstin Hayes (47th minute), Doren Staley (77th minute) and Calhoun (89th minute).
  • Smith kept the Panthers within striking distance until the final whistle, turning aside four shots during the final 11:40 of the second half.


  • Smith (5-7) has registered double-digit save totals eight times over her two-year career. Smith's previous record for single-game saves was 16, which she accomplished at Brevard during her rookie season. The sophomore standout currently boasts an impressive 1.24 goals-against average and a .849 save percentage, to go along with two shutouts on the season.
  • Panthers sophomore midfielder Sydney Dailey currently leads the team in points (16) and assists (6), while sophomore forward Dynasty Burchett leads the way with six goals.
  • Huntingdon led the shots category, 35-0, and held a 20-0 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Hawks emerged victorious by a score of 3-0 during the 2018 meeting at Panther Field.


  • The Panthers will face off against USA South-rival Piedmont at Panther Field on Saturday at noon. LaGrange will honor its two outstanding seniors in Olivia Braun and Maura Webb during Senior Day against Judson on Tuesday (5 p.m.) at Panther Field.
