Cross Country: Panthers perform well at Foothills Invitational Friday

OXFORD, Ala. - For the 13th time in her brilliant career, senior Holly Moreland of the LaGrange College cross country team was the Panthers' top-performer on the women's side Friday at the Foothills Invitational at Choccolocco Park.

Moreland, who earned All-Conference honorable mention team honors at the 2018 USA South Championship, covered the 4-kilometer course in a time of 20:04.2. The Franklin, Georgia, native set a career-best time of 25:31.00 in the 6 kilometer during an 87th-place finish out of 237 runners at the 2018 NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional.

"The first meet of the season exceeded everyone's expectations," said Moreland. "It was difficult running after such a short season last year. Some of us did not know what to expect, but after the first meet, everyone is excited for the rest of the season. We will continue to train diligently and push until the end to shine at the conference meet."

Junior Kelsey Bowen, sophomore Lindsey Green, sophomore Jacob Jeffords and freshman Joseph Grubbs made their collegiate debuts for the LC cross country team. Grubbs hit the ground running, as he was the Panthers' first-place performer on the men's side, placing 52nd overall out of 119 competitors with a time of 17:19.1 on the 5-kilometer course.

"I am truly blessed that I was able to run considering the circumstances of a lingering injury," said Grubbs. "I hope that I represented LaGrange College well for my first meet. I love this school, and this is only the beginning for us as a team."

Bowen and Green tallied times of 26:54.4 and 27:00.7, respectively. Jeffords (20:58.9) was LC's second-place performer, while junior Malcolm Roberts (21:10.1), junior Elijah Rachel (29:08.3) and sophomore John Moore (34:29.9) rounded out the unit's top-five.

"All eight runners did a phenomenal job Friday," said LaGrange College Cross Country Head Coach Jasen Jonus. "The first meet of the season is when you start to get a good feel for your team. We have a ton of competitors on this squad, and we have high expectations for the rest of the season. Our newcomers are hungry, and our returners are setting a great example every practice."

The Panthers will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Huntingdon Season Opener. The meet will start at 9 a.m. on the Greenbrier Cross Country Course in Grady, Alabama.
