Miles Lee's RBI double in the 11th inning of the second game of a doubleheader gave LaGrange a 7-6 win over Maryville on Sunday in Williamson Stadium at Cleaveland Field.
Lee's hit gave the Panthers (11-15, 3-0 GSAC) a sweep of the GSAC doubleheader and the weekend series from the Scots (10-14, 0-3 GSAC). The Panthers took the first game Sunday 7-4 and have won three straight for the first time this season.
In the second game, the Panthers carried a 5-0 lead into the eighth inning behind starting pitcher Robbie Williams. The Scots scored four runs in the eighth off Williams to cut the Panthers' lead to one.
The Panthers added a run in the bottom of the eighth. David Miller drove in pinch-runner James Hall with a two-out opposite field hit to right to put the Panthers up 6-4 heading to the ninth.
In the ninth, the Scots loaded the bases with no outs off reliever Isaiah Whitfield, who had got the final two outs in the eighth. Tyler Brooks (2-0) came in and got the first out but Nick Dean tied the game 6-6 with a two-run single. Brooks got the final two outs to get out of the jam. Dean's hit was the only one allowed by Dean in three innings of work.
In the 11th, Austin Patton (1-3), who had come on in the seventh inning for the Scots, quickly got the first two outs of the inning. Designated hitter Jim Reed kept the inning going with a single up the middle.
Lee followed with a line drive over right fielder Cory Kopec's head. Reed never slowed down around third, scoring ahead of Kopec's throw for the winning run.
Lee had entered the series 0-for-10 on the season. He went 4-for-8 in the three games; with three runs scored and four RBIs.
The Panthers had 16 hits in the game. Josh Shiver had three hits, while four other Panthers had two hits each. Evin Eichelberger was one of the four with two hits. In the three games, Eichelberger batted .583, going 7-for-12.
In the first game, the Panthers led 4-0 after four innings. Cody Muren had a RBI double in the third inning and Brent Kinsey capped a three-run third with a two-run single. Kinsey went 3-for-5 with three RBIs in the game.
Maryville did all of its scoring in the fifth to tie the game 4-4. The Panthers broke the tie with three runs in the eighth inning.
Eichelberger led off the inning with a single and later scored on Kinsey's two-out single. Muren followed with a RBI single of his own to make it 6-4. The Panthers added another run as Muren stayed in a run down between first and second long enough for Kinsey to score from third to up the lead to 7-4.
Doug Scherer (3-3) pitched eight innings to even his record. Scherer allowed three earned runs, seven hits, walked on and struck out four. Whitfield came on in the in the ninth to retire the Scots for his second save of the season.
The Panthers host 26th-ranked DePauw (16-3) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a non-conference game.
