JACKSON, Miss. - LaGrange rallied twice to beat Rhodes 8-6 on Saturday at the Millsaps Baseball Classic. The Panthers moved to 2-0, while Rhodes is now 1-1.
Rhodes led 3-0 in the fifth before LC tied the game in the sixth on Rhett Hebert's two-out RBI single. The Lynx retook the lead with three runs in the top of eighth.
The Panthers answered in their half of the eighth inning. Jared Alridge, Matt Eden, and Hebert walked to start the inning and load the bases. The two pitching staffs combined for 21 walks in the game, 10 by LC. Adam Dorn followed with a two-run single up the middle to make it a one run game.
Rhodes got the next two outs, before Cael Chatham walked to keep the inning going. Jack Layrisson drew a bases loaded walk to force in the tying run. Nate Darwin broke the tie with a base hit through the left side, bringing home Chatham and Joe Ruth for an 8-6 lead.
Michael Menhart, the sixth pitcher in the game for the Panthers, worked around a hit batsman and an error in the ninth inning to get his first collegiate career save. Jacob Brown (1-0) got the win. Dalton Brooks started the game, going 4-1/3 innings. He allowed five hits, three runs, two earned, walked three and struck out one.
The Panthers had seven hits in the game, all singles. Darwin and Ruth each had two hits.
The Panthers close out the tournament Sunday against Centenary at 1 p.m.
