Football: Maryville rolls past Panthers with big fourth quarter

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Maryville took advantage of LaGrange mistakes in 52-16 USA South win Saturday at Thornton Stadium. The Panthers fourth straight loss left them 1-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

The Panthers were playing a number of key starters due to injuries, including senior quarterback Shedrick Lindsey. Freshman Tyler Coleman started in Lindsey's place, throwing for 203 yards and two touchdowns.

Maryville's defense forced four Panther turnovers in the game. The Scots converted two into touchdowns and also recorded two safeties. LC was held to 3 yards rushing on 20 attempts in the game.

Maryville opened the scoring on its first possession of the game to take a 7-0 lead. Coleman and the Panthers answered with a six play 80-yard scoring drive. Receiver LJ Flint accounted for 62 of the yards with three catches. He had a 35-yard reception to move the Panthers down to the Scots' 35. Two plays later, Coleman found Flint from 20 yards out to finish the drive and tie the game 7-7.

The defense forced Maryville into a three and out after the touchdown. Ajani Williams returned the ensuing punt 33 yards to the Scots' 16. De'queze Fryer gathered in Coleman's pass for a 14-yard touchdown and a 14-7 lead. Fryer extended his own school record with his seventh straight game with a TD reception.

The Scots' defense recorded a safety to start a run of 15 straight points to go up 22-14. The Panthers picked up two points following the last score. DeMarques Densmore scooped the ball after the blocked extra point, returning it 81 yards to make it 22-16.

Maryville extended its lead to 29-16 late in the half. The Panthers' final drive of the half ended in a missed goal field goal.

The two teams played a scoreless third quarter. The Scots, with the aid of LC turnovers, rolled up 23 points in the final quarter to win going away.

The Panthers host Greensboro next Saturday for Homecoming 2021 at Callaway Stadium. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
