FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Methodist shut down LaGrange 8-1 at Armstrong-Shelley Field on Saturday. The Panthers dropped to 5-3, while the Monarchs improved to 7-4.
A day after having 23 hits, the Panthers were held to just three hits by the Monarchs. Kevin McCrary, Matt Hvizdzak and Bobby Woodall had the hits for the Panthers.
Tre' Britt (3-0) pitched seven innings to get the win. He allowed the three hits, walked two and struck out nine. Rett Lee and Brett Bially each threw a scoreless inning.
Doug Scherer (1-1) started and took the loss for the Panthers. Scherer allowed seven runs, three earned, in 5-2/3 innings. He walked five and struck out five.
Ryan Bergman allowed a run in two-thirds of an inning. Woodall did not allow a run in an inning and a third, while Noel Thomas got the final out of the eighth inning.
The Panthers' only run came in the third inning. Phil Woods walked with one out and stole second. He scored on McCrary's hit to left to cut Methodist's lead to 2-1.
The Monarchs finished with 11 hits in the game. Trey Such was one of four Monarchs with two hits in the game. Such scored three runs and capped the scoring with a solo home run in the seventh inning.
The two teams finish their two-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. The Panthers host Capital (Ohio) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
