LaGrange and Ferrum wrapped up their three-game USA South series Monday at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium.
Ferrum (11-4, 8-1 USA South) got a tie-breaking two-run home run in the ninth innng off the bat of Clay Massie in the 5-3 win over the Panthers (3-11, 1-5 USA South).
The Panthers had a season-high 17 hits in the game. Junior Jim Reed had a career-high four hits in the game. Jake Hipple and Chris Laye each had three hits.
Jarred Adams started on the mound for the Panthers. Adams threw seven innings, allowed three runs and scattered eight hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out six.
Ferrum took a 2-0 lead off Adams in the third inning. The Panthers came back in their half of the inning to tie the game.
The Panthers loaded the bases with one out on three straight hits by Reed, Hipple and Cain Sauls. Casey Bell followed with a double to left center, driving in Reed and Hipple to tie the game 2-2.
The two teams swapped runs in the sixth inning. Ferrum went up 3-2 as Adam Duncan led off with a double and later scored on a ground out.
In the bottom of the inning, Adam Terrinoni started the inning with a single to center field. He moved up to second on James Maxwell's sacrifice bunt.
Reed followed with a base hit to left and took second on the throw from the outfield as Terrinoni stopped at third. Hipple's ground out to first base brought in Terrinoni with the tying run.
It stayed 3-3 until the ninth. Austin Winkles led off with an infield hit. Two outs later, Massie hit reliever Cole Anderson's (0-3) pitch down the left field line for his first home run of the season and a 5-3 lead.
The Panthers threatened in the bottom of the inning. Laye and Kyle Nerbonne had back-to-back singles with two outs. But Duncan (1-0), pitching his third inning of relief, retired Terrinoni to end the game.
The Panthers host Hampden-Sydney on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a non-conference game.
