Averett beat LaGrange 16-7 in a USA South game on Monday at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium. The win enabled the Cougars (11-6, 8-4 USA South) to take two of three games from the Panthers (6-12, 6-9 USA South).
The Panthers did all of their scoring in the eighth and ninth innings. Grant Perry had an RBI single and Chris Laye drove in another run with a sacrifice fly as the Panthers got four runs in the eighth.
In the ninth, with two on and one out, Kyle Gutowski hit his first home run for the 16-7 final score. Gutowski had entered the game in the eighth and finished 2-for-2 in the game.
Zach English (2-2) started and took the loss for the Panthers. He was followed by Daniel Garrett, Stephen Coelho and Logan Hood.
The Panthers take on Oglethorpe at home Wednesday in a non-conference at 7 p.m.
