CARY, N.C. - LaGrange finished a three-game USA South sweep of William Peace with a 4-0 win Sunday at the USA Baseball National Training Center.
The Panthers (9-13, 9-9 USA South) got their third straight strong pitching performance against the Pacers.
Freshman Zach English allowed only five hits in seven innings to raise his record to 3-2. English did not allow a hit until two outs in the fourth inning, giving the Panthers a stretch of 14-2/3 innings without allowing a hit to the Pacers.
Daniel Garrett pitched the final two innings to preserve the Panthers' second straight shutout, which they had not done since the 2004 season. In the three games, the Panthers allowed only an unearned run. The one run allowed was the fewest in the NCAA era by the Panthers in a three-game series.
The Panthers gave English all the runs he would need in the first inning. Casey Bell had a two-out RBI single and Alec Redden followed with a run-scoring double for a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers would add a run in the fourth and seventh innings. In the fourth, Jackson Patrick drove in Redden, who had led off the inning with a single. Jim Reed doubled to start the seventh and later scored as Cain Sauls reached on an error.
The Panthers had nine hits in the game. Reed finished with three hits and scored two runs. Redden and Patrick each had two hits.
The Panthers host Hendrix on Wednesday and the University of Chicago on Friday. Both games have 7 p.m. starts.
