Jon Brock had two hits, including a double, and Josh Shiver added two RBIs as LaGrange (2-6) fell 9-4 to No. 6 Birmingham-Southern (4-2) on Tuesday in Williamson Stadium at Cleaveland Field.
Birmingham-Southern took an early 3-0 lead off Panther starter Tyler Brooks (0-1). Brooks pitched five innings, allowing four runs, walking one and striking out two.
The Panthers got two of the runs back in their half of the third inning. Brandon Espinosa reached on an error with one out. Brock followed with a double to center field to put runners on second and third. Shiver then doubled to left, scoring both runners to cut the visiting Panthers' lead to 3-2.
Birmingham-Southern held a 5-2 lead in the sixth inning. The Panthers pushed across an unearned run to get within two runs. They loaded the bases with two outs and Blake Schuck scored off an error to make it 5-3.
The Panthers closed out their scoring in the seventh inning. Anthony Iannetta walked with two outs. He moved over to third on two wild pitches. Kyle Nerbonne singled through the left side to score Iannetta with the Panthers' fourth run.
Brock had two of the Panthers' six hits. In addition to Shiver and Nerbonne, Cody Muren and Miles Lee each had a hit.
Patrick Riley and Henry Jacobs followed Brooks on the mound. Riley pitched 1-1/3 innings in his first collegiate outing. Jacobs pitched the final 2-2/3 innings, allowing a run and striking out three.
The Panthers are scheduled to play a three-game USA South series at North Carolina Wesleyan beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday.
