LaGrange evened its USA South record with a 4-1 win over Greensboro on Sunday in Williamson Stadium at Cleaveland Field. The Panthers (6-8, 6-6 USA South) took two of the three weekend games from The Pride (8-8, 4-8 USA South).
Doug Scherer (3-1) pitched seven scoreless innings to get the win. He scattered nine hits, did not walk a batter and struck out five. Scherer was backed up defensively with two double plays turned by the Panthers.
Greensboro threatened in each of the first three innings. Scherer struck out the side in the first to strand two runners and a double play ended the second after two runners reached.
The Pride loaded the bases with no outs on an error and two hits in the third inning. Right fielder Jon Brock snared Austin Catherina's line drive and doubled up the runner at first for a double play. Scherer then struck out Matt Parker to end the threat and the inning.
The Panthers gave Scherer all the runs he would need in the fourth inning. James Hall led off the inning with a single to left. Kyle Nerbonne followed with a double off the left field fence as Hall came all the way around to score the game's first run.
Brandon Espinosa reached on a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Brock laid down a bunt as Nerbonne scored the second run of the inning. Espinosa ended up on third and Brock at second on an error on the play. One out later, Brent Kinsey singled up the middle to drive in Espinosa to make it 3-0.
The Panthers added an insurance run in the seventh inning. They loaded the bases with one out on a base hit by Josh Shiver, Cody Muren was then hit by a pitch and a bunt single by Jim Reed. Nerbonne drove in his second run of the game with a two-out single to score Shiver.
Greensboro avoided the shutout in the ninth inning. James Feldmann had a two-out RBI double off reliever Blake Schuck.
The Panthers host Wabash on Wednesday in a non-conference game beginning at 5 p.m.
