Football: Belhaven runs past Panthers in USA South game

Jackson, Mississippi—The LaGrange College Panther Football Team fell on Friday night on the road against Belhaven, 70-16. The game was moved up from Saturday afternoon due to impending weather.

The Blazers (7-1, 5-1) scored the game's first points on a 20-yard and 33-yard pass to make it 14-0, then Panthers kicker Alex Rivera drained an 18-yard field goal to cut the Blazers lead to 11 after one quarter.

The next two quarters were a much different story. The Blazers outscored the Panthers (1-6, 0-5) 56-6, with the score being 49-3 in favor of Belhaven at the break and 70-9 after three quarters. The only Panthers score was on a one-yard pass from quarterback Shedrick Lindsey to Marcus Jacob.

The fourth quarter was scoreless until running back Christian Waymon broke off a 65-yard run for a touchdown with 36 seconds left in the game to make the final 70-16 in favor of the Blazers.

The Panther offense struggled at times, only amassing 221 total yards. Lindsey threw for 131 yards and a touchdown on 30 attempts, as well as an interception. Waymon led the Panthers in the rushing department, amassing 74 yards on the ground, with 65 coming on that run in the fourth quarter. LJ Flint led the Panthers in receiving, grabbing 3 catches for 52 yards.

The Panthers also struggled on defense. The D gave up season highs in points (70) and total yards (691), with 449 of those being on the ground. Isaiah Screen led the team in tackles with six and Deon King Jr. grabbed five tackles, including the team's only TFL.

LaGrange will be back at home next week for Senior Day against Southern Virginia, as they vie for win number two.
