JACKSON, Miss. – Junior Brittany Todd of the LaGrange College softball team went 3-for-8 batting with a double and two RBIs in a pair of games on Saturday at the Millsaps Tournament, as the Panthers fell to Austin, 4-2, and Millsaps, 5-4, in eight innings.
During the season-opening doubleheader for LaGrange (0-2), freshmen Abbey Gardner and Maggie White and juniors Rebekah Hobson and Ivy Grant recorded their first hits in Panther uniforms.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS (Austin 4, LaGrange 2):
- The Panthers opened the scoring in the bottom of the third, as sophomore Landon DeLamar led off with a double. Two batters later, Todd drilled a one-run double, scoring DeLamar from second for a 1-0 advantage.
- The Kangaroos (3-7) responded with a four-run fourth, as Aubri Dayle Smith evened the game at 1-1 with a one-run single to center, scoring Reina Serrano. Dayle Smith scored a run two at-bats later on an RBI double to left by Marisa Duke, which gave Austin a 3-1 lead. An RBI ground out by Jaide Vidal allowed Duke to cross home plate with Austin's fourth run.
- During the bottom of the sixth, senior Riley Densmore ripped a two-out single to left, and then sophomore pinch runner Karli Whitaker stole second. Whitaker trimmed the deficit down to 4-2 two batters later on an RBI single to center by DeLamar.
- Gardner made her first-collegiate appearance as a relief pitcher, as she worked four innings. She allowed no runs in the fifth inning, retiring three-straight batters after giving up a leadoff double. In the sixth, she struck out a pair of batters swinging, and then recorded a 1-2-3 seventh. Gardner's command of the strike zone was impressive, as she did not walk a single batter.
- Todd went 2-for-4 in the batter's box, finishing with a double and an RBI. LaGrange recorded seven hits and Austin ended the game with eight.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS (Millsaps 5, LaGrange 4, 8 innings):
- The Majors (5-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a two-run single to center by Gia Zeringue.
- The Panthers scored the next four runs of the game, as Gardner continued to impress, bringing the Panthers to within one in the fourth on a two-out, solo home run.
- LaGrange recorded a three-run fifth, highlighted by a two-run single to right with no outs by White. Grant and Whitaker crossed home, giving LaGrange a 3-2 lead. During the ensuing at-bat, Todd lined an RBI single to left, as senior McKenzie Brunel raced across home with the Panthers' fourth run.
- Katelyn Norse of Millsaps knotted the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out, two-run single.
- During extra innings in college softball, the initial batter gets placed on second base. In the bottom of the eighth, Cameron Trussell was placed on second, and then scored the game-winning run with two outs during an RBI single to short by Karlie Galloway.
- Six different Panthers recorded a hit in the game, as Millsaps held a 9-6 advantage in hits.
