LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - LaGrange and Covenant split their USA South doubleheader Friday. The Panthers (7-7, 1-1 USA South) took Game 1 13-5 before the Scots (3-6. 1-1) rallied to win the second game 8-6.
Game 1: Jack Layrisson hit his second home run in as many games and drove in four runs to lead the Panthers. LC had 15 hits in the game, with everyone in the starting lineup getting at least one hit. Jame Poropatic had a pair of singles and three RBIs. Jacob Gassert, Rhett Mixon, and Jackson Patrick all had two hits. Patrick had a double included in his hits. Richie Post (1-0) allowed a run in six innings of work. He walked two and struck out four.
Game 2: The Scots took a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Panthers answered with four runs in the second and another run in the third to go up 5-3. Jacob Gassert's three-run home run highlighted the second inning. Covenant retook the lead for good with three runs in the fifth and added two insurance runs in the seventh. McKinley Erves had two-out run-scoring single in the ninth for the game's final run. Austin Fain (2-3) allowed six runs in five innings to take the loss.
The two teams conclude their three-game series Saturday at 11 a.m.
