Maryville edges Panthers 20-17 in three overtimes

Maryville, Tenn. – Andrew Noboa's 33-yard field goal in the third overtime lifted Maryville College to a 20-17 win over LaGrange College at Lloyd Thornton Stadium on Saturday. It was the first win of the season for the Fighting Scots (1-2), while the Panthers dropped to 1-2.

LaGrange played its second straight overtime game. The Panthers defeated Millsaps 27-21 last week in their first ever overtime game.

Andrecus Lindley accounted for both of the Panthers' touchdowns. Lindley scored on a 52-yard pass play in the third quarter and on a 9-yard run in the first overtime. He finished the game with 130 all-purpose yards.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie at halftime. Maryville put together a 9-play 64-yard drive for the game's first touchdown. Dustin Williams threw 16 yards to Travis Felder to give the Scots a 7-0 lead. The touchdown was set up by Phil Garrett's interception of a Drew Carter pass.

The Panthers answered with a quick two-play 53-yard drive of their own. Lindley took a short pass from Carter and turned into a 52-yard score to tie the game 7-7 with 3:14 left in the third quarter.

Maryville regained the lead in the fourth quarter.  Taking over at midfield, the Scots drove the ball to the Panthers' 17 before being stopped. Noboa's 33-yard field goal put the Scots up 10-7 with 6:12 left in regulation.

Carter led the Panthers down the field after Noboa's field goal. He ran for 11 yards on a third-and-10 to the Maryville 44. Carter hooked up with R.J. Miles for 19 yards on a third-and-15 to the Scots' 31.

The Panthers reached the Scots' 5-yard line with 27 seconds left in regulation after Carter completed a 10-yard pass to Devin Billings. But three straight incompletions brought fourth down. Josh Stripling sent the game into overtime with a 22-yard field goal with 13 seconds left in regulation.

The Panthers took a 17-10 lead in the first overtime. Lindley ran the ball three of the four plays, scoring from nine yards out to put the Panthers ahead.

Maryville sent the game to a second overtime as Williams threw a short 4-yard pass to Wesley Idelette for the tying touchdown. The score was set up by Williams' 21-yard completion to Ryan Roach on a fourth-and-15 play.

Anthony Cochran ended Maryville's second overtime possession with an interception. But Stripling missed a 36-yard field goal to win the game, forcing a third overtime.

The Panthers got the ball first in the third overtime. Stripling missed from 42 yards as Maryville took over. The Scots gained seven yards on three plays and Noboa came on and kicked the game-winner.

LaGrange finished with 365 yards of offense, while Maryville had 268. Carter finished the game with 241 yards passing. Miles and Billings each had seven receptions in the game.

The Panthers play at N.C. Wesleyan next Saturday. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
