Women’s Soccer: Panthers suffer 2-0 setback to Mississippi University for Women

The LaGrange College women's soccer team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end with a 2-0 loss against Mississippi University for Women on Tuesday, as the Owls scored a goal in each half at Panther Field.

The Panthers (6-4) still sit two games above .500 with eight of their final nine games coming against USA South competition.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • During the sixth minute, Panthers freshman goalkeeper Maurie White kept the game scoreless with a diving save toward the right post on a strike from Lizzie Truelock inside the 18-yard box.
  • Panthers senior midfielder Maura Webb placed an exceptional through ball in the ninth minute to a sprinting Dynasty Burchett, but the sophomore forward's shot went over the crossbar.
  • The Owls (6-4) were awarded a penalty kick during the 15th minute off a handball offense in the box. White predicted correctly and dove to her left, but Sarah Havens drove the ball beyond the goalkeeper's hand and found the top-right corner of the net.
  • Midway through the first half, LaGrange showcased its strong passing ability, as Burchett sent a cross from the right side into the box. Sophomore midfielder Sydney Dailey tapped a pass over to Morgan Christian, but the freshman midfielder was denied by goalkeeper Sarah Gilliland.
  • Sophomore defender Madison Demkowski made an elite defensive play with 20 minutes left in the opening half on a corner kick by the Owls, as she elevated in traffic and headed a dangerous ball out of the box.
  • The Owls tried to extend their lead to 2-0 on a free kick by Jazmin Roman with 19:20 left in regulation, but White was able to prevent the ball from going into the top of the net with a deflection save.
  • Mississippi University for Women ended the scoring in the 80th minute, as Chelsey Walker buried a shot from the left side of the box into the top of net.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • White (2-1-0) compiled a game-high seven saves, as she has only given up two goals in three collegiate starts.
  • Burchett and sophomore forward Zoe Watts each tallied three shots, putting a combined three on target.
  • The Owls led the shots category, 22-7, and the shots-on-goal statistic, 9-4.

UP NEXT:

  • The Panthers will take on USA South-rival Agnes Scott on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Decatur, Georgia.
