MACON, Ga. – Sophomore forward Dynasty Burchett of the LaGrange College women's soccer team netted the equalizer in the 52nd minute on Wednesday, but USA South-foe Wesleyan scored the game-winner with 37 seconds left in regulation during a 2-1 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Wolves (3-9-1, 1-4 USA South) opened the scoring 12:48 into the first half, as Quenshawn Brandon one-timed a shot into the left side of the net off a corner kick by Fetlework Blitch.
- During the 30th minute, sophomore forward Zoe Watts of the Panthers (6-8, 0-4 USA South) drilled a shot from distance on the left attacking side, but the attempt ricocheted off the crossbar. Burchett's follow-up chance 14 seconds later slid wide past the left post.
- Panthers sophomore defender Madison Demkowski recorded a steal on a through-ball attempt deep in LaGrange's zone with 40 seconds left in the first half.
- Demkowski orchestrated the Panthers' goal, sending a long ball from LaGrange's own zone, which gave the Wolves' defense trouble. Burchett won the ball and dribbled down the right attacking side, as her shot from 23 yards out 6:37 into the second half deflected off the hands of Wesleyan goalkeeper Carlee Dykes and went into the goal.
- Demkowski recorded a team save in the 71st minute, clearing a ball off LaGrange's goal line after Wesleyan's Thi Soe looped a shot over the head of Panthers sophomore goalkeeper Emma Smith.
- In the 90th minute, Brandon played a ball on the ground across the box, and then Christina Wiswell buried the game-winner into the bottom-right corner from the left edge of the box.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Smith (4-6) stopped four shots in the second half for LaGrange, as she maintains an impressive 1.29 goals-against average.
- LaGrange held an 11-7 lead in shots on goal, while Wesleyan led the overall shots category, 16-14. Burchett sent seven of her game-high eight shots on net.
- The last three meetings between LaGrange and Wesleyan have ended in 2-1 decisions. The Panthers emerged victorious in the 2018 meeting at Panther Field, as then-freshman Sydney Dailey scored the game-winner.
