The LaGrange softball team opens its 2017 season Sunday at NCAA Division II member Georgia Southwestern in Americus, Georgia. The scheduled doubleheader starts at 12 p.m.
Coach Jennifer Claybrook starts her 15th season leading the Panthers. She has a career record of 329-269.
The Panthers return their leading hitter from 2016, junior Carolyn Harkness. Harkness batted .379 and was a perfect 7-for-7 in stolen bases. Sophomore Emily Barrs returns after missing last season with an injury. She was a USA South All-Conference second team selection in 2015 after batting .347 with three home runs and 23 RBIs. Sophomore Sydney Hodorff batted .299 and was second on the team with three home runs. Sophomore Maegan Harrison was second on the team with 23 RBIs.
LC was picked third in the West Division 2017 USA South coaches poll. The Panthers received a first place vote behind top pick Piedmont and Maryille.
The 2017 USA South Softball Tournament will feature the top-six teams from each division and begin on the weekend of April 7-9. The top-three seeds from each division will host best-of-three series. The winners of those series will advance to a six-team double-elimination tournament which will be played April 13-15 at the Shuford Softball Complex in LaGrange, Georgia as a part of the USA South Spring Sports Festival, hosted by the City of LaGrange and Troup County.
