WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Salem won its USA South Tournament best-of-three series with LaGrange on Saturday. The Spirits (27-14) beat the Panthers (11-21) 2-0 and 7-6 to advance in the tournament.
Game 1
Salem's Sydney Vaughn (10-2) outdueled the Panthers' Chelsea Twardoski (9-12) in the first game. Vaughn held LC to two hits in the game. Twardoski pitched five innings, giving up two runs on five hits. Katelyn Little threw a scoreless inning of relief pitching.
Game 2
The Spirits jumped out to a 6-0 lead heading to the bottom of the fourth inning. Emily Barrs started a five-run rally with a two-run home run, her seventh of the season. Kelsey Dietz added an RBI single and Twardoski's two-run base hit made it a one-run game, 6-5. Salem got an insurance run in the top of the seventh to go up 7-5. Taylor Tallent's two-out hit made it a one-run game again but the Spirits held on for the win.
The Panthers will host Agnes Scott next Saturday and Wesleyan on Sunday for Senior Day.
