The women's basketball team returns to action with a busy week of USA South games in Mariotti Gym. The Panthers (7-5, 2-1 USA South) start with Wesleyan on Monday at 6 p.m. LC faces Covenant on Friday at 6 p.m. and Brevard on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Panthers Update
The Panthers have not played since an 84-47 loss to ninth-ranked DePauw at the St. Petersburg Classic on Dec. 20. Junior guard Gracie Brunel is fifth in the USA South in scoring, averaging 17.1 points per game. She leads the team in assists (3.3) and steals (3.1) per game. Brunel was named the USA South Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 19. She averaged 21.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 4.5 steals in leading the Panthers to a 2-0 week. Senior guard Jalaya Lewis is second to Brunel on the team, averaging 13.0 points per game. Junior center Jada Strickland averages 6.0 points and a team-best 5.8 rebounds per game.
Wesleyan Update
The Wolves enter Monday's game with an 0-8 record, including 0-2 in conference games. The Wolves have not played since a 110-72 home loss to Birmingham-Southern on Dec. 5. Junior guard Jamila Ra-Hashim is averaging a team-best 12.8 points per game. Kelsey Houpt averages 10.9 points and is fourth in conference in rebounding, averaging 9.8 per game. The Panthers lead the series 36-2 and have won 30 straight against the Wolves.
Covenant Update
The Scots (6-3, 3-0 USA South) are battling the COVID virus. The Scots have had to cancel their upcoming game with Piedmont on Tuesday. Covenant started the season 6-1, including a 67-61 overtime win over USA South rival Maryville. The Scots lost at home 94-62 to Asbury on Dec. 10 in their last game. Junior guard Cosette Kirsch leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.6 points per game. The Panthers are 15-6 against the Scots. Covenant won 69-56 during the 2020-21 season in the last meeting between the two teams.
Brevard Update
The Tornados are 6-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Brevard plays at Huntingdon on Friday before facing the Panthers. The Tornados lost 66-57 to Bob Jones on Dec. 7. Graduate forward Destiny Williams is the conference's leading scorer, averaging 20.1 points per game. Brevard leads the series 4-3 and won the last meeting 65-54 on Feb. 1, 2020.
