BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Birmingham-Southern edged LaGrange 3-1 and 3-2 in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday. The Panthers are now 12-8 on the season.
Olivia Wolfe (6-5) started and took the loss. Wolfe pitched the first three innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Dani Gravett gave up a run in two innings and Kara Patterson pitched a scoreless inning.
Alyssa Statham drove in all three of Birmingham-Southern's runs with a two-run home run in the third and a solo shot in the fifth.
The Panthers got their run in the fourth. Wolfe led off the inning with a double, followed by Adrienne Little's RBI single, scoring pinch runner Carolyn Harkness.
In the second game, the host Panthers led 3-0 after three innings off Gravett (4-1).
The Panthers got within a run in the fifth. Brooke Turner and Emily Barrs led off the inning with singles and moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Christy Flick's base hit scored two runs to make it 3-2.
In the seventh, the Panthers threatened to tie the game. Flick led off with a single and ended up on second when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. She moved over to third on Lindsey Hogan's sacrifice bunt, but pitcher Bethany Fronk (7-1) got the final two outs to preserve the win for Birmingham-Southern.
The Panthers host nationally-ranked Averett in a USA South doubleheader Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
