BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The LaGrange men's lacrosse program got its official start Saturday at Birmingham-Southern. The more experienced host Panthers took an 18-3 win over the young LC team.
"Obviously not the result we wanted but the effort was there all day," said Coach Brandon Sewell. "BSC is an experienced and talented team and we wanted to give ourselves a test for our season opener. Today really allowed us to see what we need to work on and continue to improve on heading into our games next week."
Tareyon Delgado did all of LC's scoring in the game.The freshman midfielder scored the program's first ever goal in the first period. BSC opened the scoring two minutes into the game to take a quick 1-0 lead. Delgado answered for LC two minutes later. He beat goalie Luke Fajack to tie the game. The host Panthers retook the lead just 53 seconds later. But the Panthers held BSC scoreless over the final 10 minutes of the period to trail just 2-1 heading to the second period.
Trailing 4-1, Delgado drew LC closer with a goal at the 12:50 mark of the period. BSC ran off eight straight goals to close out the half with a 12-2 lead.
In the third period, the visiting Panthers only allowed two goals by BSC. Delgado got his third goal of the game, sandwiched between the host Panther goals. BSC closed out the scoring with four fourth period goals.
Delgado also led LC with four ground balls. Isaac Bohrer had 12 saves in goal for the Panthers.
The Panthers host Centenary on Friday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. for their first ever home game.
