FERRUM, Va. - LaGrange took on Ferrum in a USA South doubleheader Sunday. The Panthers were edged 5-4 in the first game and 5-2 in the second game.
The Panthers are 10-4 overall and 3-3 in USA South play. The host Panthers (8-4, 4-2 USA South) won their seventh and eighth games in a row.
The Panthers had 10 hits by 10 different players in the first game. Olivia Wolfe had her first home run of the season and a sacrifice fly to drive in two runs.
Trailing 1-0, Wolfe led off the second inning for the Panthers with her home run to tie the game. Keeley Murray later scored on Alison Jiles' two-out single for a 2-1 lead.
The Panthers increased their lead to 3-1 in the third. Dani Gravett led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a two-out error by Ferrum.
The host Panthers got a run back in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead.
The Panthers staged a rally in the top of the seventh. They got a run on Wolfe's sacrifice fly, scoring Christy Flick, who had started the inning with a single. But Ferrum was able to hold on for the 5-4 win.
Wolfe took the loss, pitching in relief of Gravett. Gravett allowed two earned runs in five innings. Three of Ferrum's five runs were unearned.
In the second game, the Panthers got both of their runs in the seventh inning. With one out, Murray doubled for her second hit of the game. Amanda Morier reached on an error as Murray scored on the play. Breanna Wallace scored the second run on Jiles' sacrifice fly to right field.
Wolfe pitched the first two innings for the Panthers. She was followed by Lindsey Hogan, Christy Flick and Amanda Stukel.
The Panthers play a USA South doubleheader at Mary Baldwin on Monday beginning at 10 a.m.
