MARYVILLE, Tenn. - LaGrange split a USA South doubleheader Sunday against homestanding Maryville. The Panthers won the first game 10-4, with the Scots taking the second game 3-2.
The split left the Panthers 19-9 overall and 10-8 in the USA South. The Panthers are tied for sixth in the USA South standings with six conference games remaining. The top eight teams qualify for the conference tournament April 11-13 in Rocky Mount, N.C.
Junior Olivia Wolfe pitched and batted the Panthers past the Scots in the first game. At the plate, Wolfe had two doubles and hit her fifth home run of the season. On the mound, she threw a complete game in raising her record to 11-3. Only two of the four runs charged to Wolfe were earned.
The Panthers tied a season high with 15 hits. Alison Jiles had four hits and two RBIs. Courtney Beshel, Christy Flick, Adrienne Little and Kalin Oglesby all had two hits.
Wolfe scored the go-ahead run in the third inning to break a 2-2 tie. She had led off the inning with a double.
The Panthers added two runs in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to build a 10-2 lead. Wolfe closed out the Panthers' scoring with a two-run home run in the seventh inning.
In the second game, the Panthers did all of their scoring in the first inning. Wolfe doubled in Oglesby, who had reached on a one-out single. Dani Gravett drove in Wolfe with a base hit up the middle for a 2-0 lead.
Maryville (7-27, 5-15 USA South) did all of its scoring in the second off Gravett (3-4), who went the distance on the mound. Gravett scattered nine hits, walked two and struck out four.
Brooke Turner was 3-for-3 at the plate for the Panthers, who had eight hits.
The Panthers host Huntingdon in a USA South doubleheader Thursday beginning at 3 p.m.. It will be the first home games for the Panthers since facing Piedmont on March 13.
