LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - LaGrange swept a USA South doubleheader from Covenant on Saturday. The Panthers (6-4, 2-2 USA South) won 9-4 and 9-3 to run their winning streak to four.
Game 1
The Panthers had 15 hits, including home runs by Kelsey Dietz and Madelynn Formby. Formby's two-run home run capped a three-run first inning for LC. Dietz staked the Panthers to a 5-0 lead with a two-run home run of her own in the third. In the fifth, Michael Keel had an RBI double and Haley Coleman added a run-scoring triple. McKenzie Brunel and Taylor Long had RBI singles to push the Panthers lead to 9-1. Emsley Smith (3-3) went the distance allowing the four runs, only three were earned. She walked tow and struck out five.
Game 2
Long went 4-for-4 and Brittany Todd was 3-for-3 to help LC complete the sweep. The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Todd's RBI single and on Kaitlin Redman's ground out. Covenant came back with three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning off Payton Thomas (2-1) to go up 3-2. Thomas allowed only two hits over the final six innings. The Panthers took the lead for good with three runs in the third to lead 5-3. They added four more runs in the seventh for the 9-3 final score. LC finished the game with 13 hits.
The Panthers host Huntingdon on Thursday in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
