LaGrange took a doubleheader from Covenant on Saturday at Cleaveland Field in Wiliamson Stadium. The Panthers' (12-1, 3-0 USA South) 7-1 and 15-3 wins over the Scots completed a three-game sweep of their USA South series.
Andrew Weekley turned in a strong pitching performance in the first game. Third baseman Blake Butcher had four hits, including a home run, and six RBIs in the two games.
Covenant (5-7, 0-3 USA South) got a first inning run off Weekley (3-0). The Scots had four hits in the inning but left the bases loaded.
Weekley settled down after the first. He allowed only three hits over the next seven innings, walking one and striking out seven.
The Panthers scored a run in every inning but the seventh off Drew Bradley (2-2) and Ty Wilmore. Butcher had a double and a triple with two RBIs in the game. Joe Pradat and Blane Swift also had two hits.
The Panthers scored all of their runs in the first five innings of the second game. The game was called after seven innings because of the run rule.
LC broke a 1-1 tie in the second inning with five runs. Tavin Thompson had a two-run single and Butcher capped the inning with a two-run blast to left field for a 6-1 lead. The home run was Butcher's team leading third of the season.
The Panthers continued to build on the lead. They got two runs in the third, four more in the fourth and closed out their scoring with three in the fifth.
Zach English started for the Panthers. He pitched into the fourth inning before giving way to Dax Winningham (1-0). Richie Post pitched a scoreless sixth inning and Adam DeWitt closed out the game in the seventh.
LaGrange had 14 hits in the game. Cain Sauls had three hits, while Butcher, Thompson, Blane Swift, and Austin Jones all had two hits.
The Panthers play at Oglethorpe on Tuesday.
