MARYVILLE, Tenn. - No. 2 LaGrange gained a split of its USA South doubleheader with Maryville on Saturday. The Panthers took the second game 11-4 after the Scots won 4-3 in Game 1.
The Panthers (31-4) finished their USA South schedule 16-2. They tied the 2001 team for the program's most conference wins in a season. LC will be the top seed in next week's USA South Tournament.
Game 1
Maryville's Johnny Carpenter hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the sixth inning and drove in all four runs for the Scots. Tavin Thompson had a double and a triple and scored two of the Panthers' runs. Billy Peatross had an RBI single in the eighth to draw LC within a run. Richie Post (3-1) started and took the loss. He gave up three runs in 5-2/3 innings.
Game 2
The Panthers had 14 hits in the second game. Thompson had three more hits, scored two runs and drove in a run. James Poropatic also had three hits, including two doubles and scored three runs. Casey Bell, Austin Jones, and Blane Swift all had two RBIs. The Panthers scored four runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to break the game open. Andrew Weekley (7-1) went seven innings to get the win. He allowed four runs, walked none and struck out four.
