BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In a match up of nationally-ranked Division III teams, Birmingham-Southern topped LaGrange 4-1 on Tuesday. The No. 2/3 Panthers (26-3) had their 12-game winning streak snapped in losing for the second time to their Alabama counterparts.
The Panthers' lone run came in the second inning. Blane Swift and Chad Pigg had back-to-back doubles to start the inning to tie the game 1-1.
BSC, No. 5/7 in the polls, went ahead with a run in the bottom of the second and added two more in the fifth.
Josh Smith (2-1) started and took the loss. He gave up three runs, two of those earned, in 4-1/3 innings. Austin Perez allowed a run in two innings of work. Jonathan Fleckenstein struck out three in closing out the pitching for the Panthers.
Pigg and James Poropatic each had two hits as the Panthers finished with eight.
The Panthers play a three-game USA South series at Methodist beginning with a doubleheader Saturday. The two teams close out the series Sunday.
