MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - LaGrange surged past Oglethorpe 89-75 at the Cage Center on the Berry College campus Saturday. The Panthers improved to 4-1, while handing the Stormy Petrels (3-1) their first loss of the season.
LC was led by the senior tandem of Kyle Brown and Bershard Edwards. Brown recorded his second double-double of the season, scoring a game high 24 points and pulling down a game and career high 17 rebounds. Edwards set a new personal scoring high for the second straight game, finishing with 20 points.
LaGrange led 46-38 at halftime. Oglethorpe came out strong to start the second half, outscoring the Panthers 21-8 to take a 59-54 lead.
Kyle Smith's layup at the 10:31 mark regained the lead for LC, 62-61. Smith's basket started a 10-0 run for the Panthers and they never trailed again. Edwards scored the last six points of the run for a 70-61 lead.
The Stormy Petrels never got closer than five points the rest of the way. Edwards' three-point play gave LC its first double-digit lead, 80-70, with 3:35 remaining. Dolhancyk closed out the scoring with a three-point play of his own for the 89-75 final, the Panthers' largest lead of the game.
The Panthers shot 53.6% in the game. LC had a 44-35 rebounding advantage. The Panthers have now won five of the last six meetings with the Stormy Petrels.
The Panthers play Berry on Sunday at 3 p.m. The two teams are meeting for the 110th time in a series going back to 1958.
