After three rain outs, the LaGrange softball team got its 2013 season going Wednesday with a 15-0, 17-0 sweep of visiting Wesleyan (0-6). Senior Kayla Folds and freshman Dani Gravett pitched and hit in leading the Panthers to the two wins.
Folds (1-0) started the first game, pitching four innings and allowing one hit. She walked one and struck out six. At the plate, Folds had three and drove in four runs.
In the second game, Gravett threw four shutout innings without allowing a hit. She walked one and struck out nine. Gravett was 3-for-4 batting, including an inside the park home run. She scored three runs and finished with three RBIs.
The Panthers scored in every inning of the first game. They scored two runs in each of the first three innings, then exploded for nine runs in their final at-bat in the fourth.
Danielle Newbern had a two-run home run in her three hits. She scored and drove in four runs each. Kalin Oglesby and Kayla Grizzle each had two hits as the Panthers finished with 13 hits.
The Panthers did all of their scoring in two innings of the second game. After a scoreless first inning, the Panthers broke out for nine runs in the second inning and eight more in the third. They were helped by six Pioneer errors.
Gravett opened the scoring with an inside the park home run down the right field line. Amanda Stukel and Courtney Beshel each had three RBIs. Stukel, Beshel and Allison Coats each had two hits. The Panthers had 14 hits in the game.
The Panthers are scheduled to host Salem on Sunday in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
