DEMOREST, Ga. - No. 14 Piedmont edged LaGrange in a USA South doubleheader Wednesday. The Lady Lions won the first game 5-3, then took the second game 9-7.
The Panthers had 21 hits in the two games. Courtney Beshel, Christy Flick and Kalin Oglesby all had four hits. Flick had a triple included in her four hits and drove in three runs.
In the first game, the Panthers fell behind 3-1 after five innings. They tied the game in the top of the sixth inning.
Laura Webber's sacrifice fly brought in Dani Gravett, who had reached on fielder's choice earlier in the inning. Flick followed with an RBI single to score Beshel with the tying run.
Piedmont came back in its half of the inning to retake the lead. The Lady Lions pushed across two runs off Gravett and reliever Kayla Foldsto go up 5-3 and held the Panthers scoreless in the seventh to take the win.
Piedmont built a 6-1 lead in the second game. The Panthers came back with a run in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth.
Gravett's run-scoring double accounted for the Panthers' run in the fifth. In the sixth, Webber and Danielle Newbern had singles. Flick cleared the bases with her triple and scored on a base hit by Kara Patterson to make it 6-5.
The Lady Lions extended their lead with three runs in their half of the sixth. The Panthers fought back with two runs in the seventh on a RBI single by Newbern and another as Webber grounded out for the 9-7 final.
The Panthers host Averett on Saturday and Mary Baldwin on Sunday in USA South doubleheaders.
