MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Danielle Newbern's infield hit drove in the go-ahead run as LaGrange rallied to win 2-1 over Maryville to complete a sweep of the USA South doubheader with the Scots. The Panthers (6-2, 2-0 USA South) took the first game 6-2.
Newbern's hit, made a winner out of Dani Gravett (3-1), who retired the Scots in the bottom of the seventh to close out the win. Gravett pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits, walking one, and striking out five.
The Scots (0-16, 0-4 USA South) had held a 1-0 lead since getting an unearned run in the third inning. Courtney Beshel was hit by a pitch to start the Panthers' seventh inning and Webber bunted her way on. Both runners moved up on a double steal.
Kelbi Burgering flew out deep enough to left field to score Beshel with the tying run. Webber moved over to third as Maddie Kolovich grounded out. Newbern followed with her eventual game-winner as Webber came home.
The Panthers banged out 14 hits in taking the first game. Burgering, Newbern and Kalin Oglesby all had three hits. Kayla Grizzle and Laura Webber each had two hits, with Grizzle also have two RBIs.
The Panthers spotted the Scots a run in the first inning. They came back with three runs in the second inning to take the lead for good.
Webber started the rally with a two-out double. Burgering reached on a bunt single and stole second that was followed by a two-run single from Grizzle. Two batters later, Oglesby drove in Grizzle with an opposite field single to make it 3-1.
Burgering led off the fourth inning with a double and later scored as Grizzle grounded out to up the lead to 4-1. The Panthers closed out their scoring with two runs in the sixth inning.
Allison Coats kept the inning going with a two-out single. Kolovich came on as a pinch-runner and came around to score on a double by Newbern. Newbern scored the Panthers' sixth run as Oglesby reached on a bunt single.
Kayla Folds (2-1) pitched five innings in relief of starter Christy Flick to get the win. Folds gave up a run on just one hit, walked three and struck out eight.
The Panthers play at Ferrum on Sunday in a USA South doubleheader.
