ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - LaGrange went 2-1 on the first day of the USA South Tournament at the Rocky Mount Sports Center on Saturday.
The Panthers started the day by upsetting top-seeded Ferrum 4-1 in the completion of the suspended game from Friday. The Panthers then topped fifth-seeded Methodist 5-2 to move into the winner's bracket game against third-seeded Christopher Newport.
The Panthers fell 11-1 to the Captains but remain alive in the tournament. They will play an elimination game Sunday at 11 a.m. against the Ferrum-Methodist winner. A win in that game puts the Panthers in the championship against Christopher Newport.
Kayla Folds pitched two complete games in the wins over Ferrum and Methodist. She allowed only two earned runs and six hits.
Courtney Beshel had two doubles and two RBIs against Ferrum. Folds, Christy Flick and Laura Webber each had two hits in the game.
In the Methodist game, Flick went 3-for-3 at the plate. Beshel added a triple. Danielle Newbern had an RBI single, while the Panthers took advantage of three Methodist errors.
