LAGRANGE, Ga. – As the Yogi-ism goes, it's Deja-vu all over again as No. 3 Seed LaGrange (15-10, 7-5 CCS) men's basketball takes on No. 6 Seed Covenant (9-16, 5-7 CCS) for a second straight time, this time in the quarterfinals of the inaugural Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) Tournament on Tuesday, February 21. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at historic Mariotti Gymnasium with admission set for $10 per ticket.
The Panthers just faced the Scots in Lookout Mountain, Georgia on Wednesday, February 15 where they dropped a last second 69-68 decision. That loss is in part why the two teams will meet again as it dropped LaGrange to 7-5 in conference, tying them with Belhaven and Berea.
Based upon a 3-1 record against those teams, BU earned the No. 2 seed with LC claiming the No. 3 as a result of their season split against league champion Maryville while BC went 0-2 vs. the Scots. Covenant tied with Piedmont at 5-7 but lost the season series to drop them to the No. 6 seed.
The winner of the quarterfinal will face the winner of No. 2S Belhaven and No. 7S Huntingdon on Friday, February 24. That game and the CCS Final Four will be hosted by Maryville with the title game set for Saturday, February 25.
ALL-TIME SERIES
In a series that dates back to November 5, 1994, LaGrange trails the Scots 19-15. They would lose that one, 85-57, as part of a 1-5 start to the series before eventually winning a matchup-long five straight from February 22, 2014 through February 12, 2016. Most recently the Panthers won three in a row by a combined 13 points from February 4, 2021 through January 21, 2022 before CC managed an 80-70 decision on February 5, 2022 and a 74-61 decision in Mariotti on January 17. They stretched to their own three-game win streak with their 69-68 win last week.
