Texas-Tyler held off LaGrange College in the closing minutes for a 63-54 win Saturday at Mariotti Gymnasium. It was the final game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tipoff Classic as the Panthers (0-3) went 0-2 in the tournament.
LaGrange's Britt Gaylor led all scorers with 16 points. Gaylor was 5-for-7 shooting 3-pointers. Nic Whitfield had 15 points and Marcus Vaughn 10.
Whitfield reached another career milestone in the game. He became the 11th Panther to reach 500 career rebounds. In Friday's loss to Centre, Whitfield reached 1,000 career points on his final basket of the game.
DeJon John led Texas-Tyler (1-2) with 12 points. John was the only Patriot in double-figures.
The Patriots led 34-28 at halftime. The first half had eight lead changes and was tied six times. Gaylor hit three straight 3-pointers to tie the game at 19-19.
Denzel Robinson's layup put the Panthers up 26-24 with 7:04 left in the half. It was the last lead of the game for the Panthers. Erik DeRoo's 3-pointer put the Patriots ahead to stay.
Texas-Tyler opened up a 12-point lead in the opening minutes of the second half. The Panthers would cut the lead in half on three occasions.
Gaylor hit 1-of-2 free throws to make it 57-51 with 1:20 left in the game. He hit his final 3-pointer to make it 57-54 with under a minute remaining.
The Panthers had a chance to get closer turned the ball over with 34 seconds left. The Patriots put the game away with five free throws for the 63-54 final.
The Panthers host Birmingham-Southern on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
